A scarecrow competition has drawn crowds from far and wide.

There were about 40 scarecrows scattered around Caerwys for the event, which was organised for the first time last year.

The theme for the competition this year was films and scarecrows were inspired by films such as, Harry Potter, Toy Story, Despicable Me, Carry on Camping, Tangled, Pirates of the Caribbean and many more.

William Hebson, owner of Will’s newsagent, helped his children Roxy and Mitch make a scarecrow version of Gru, a character from Despicable Me.

He said: “My children loved it, so did I, it was great fun. It creates a great community spirit.

“It has brought in people from out of town to have a look around at the scarecrows and that’s really good for Caerwys, to have that extra footfall.”

The competition raises funds for local charities. This year they raised a total of £72.

The first competition last year raised a similar amount and funds went towards a Mother and Toddler playgroup.

This year’s funds will be going towards Ysgol yr Esgob.

Katie Pierce, organiser of the competition and treasurer of the Mother and Toddler committee said: “We’ve had lots of people visiting to walk and look around.

Thank you to the local community for the enthusiasm and doing it all in good spirit. Thanks to Will’s and On the Corner Cafe for being so helpful and supportive.

“All the scarecrows were absolutely brilliant and in regards to the winners, well they were just amazing. They were done within a very short time period but there was so much work that had gone into them they were great. Everyone was really impressed with them all.”

The winners were decided by judges, David Knights, Caerwys town mayor and Lynette Edwards, former town mayor.

Barlows Caravan park, of Caerwys, came first for their Carry on Camping-themed effort. Barlows shop assistant Faye Falshaw said: “It was amazing because we put so much effort into it and the final piece looked fantastic, the effort really paid off.”

In joint second place was Ty Isa Farm with their Pirates of the Caribbean scarecrow and Park View with a scene showing Rapunzel from Tangled.

In third place was Rhos Goch with a scarecrow inspired by Summer Holiday.
