A fundraising event came just in time for the parents of a child who has been given the all-clear by doctors.
Karina Vaughan and Scott Holt, of Flint, have been planning an event for months to give something back to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, in Liverpool, who helped save the life of their baby son Kane.
Kane was born with gastroschisis, a serious condition where a child’s abdomen does not fully develop in the womb and the intestines form outside the body.
He needed intensive care at the hospital as soon as he was born.
The eight-month-old had to stay in hospital for 11 weeks due to additional complications.
Days before the fundraiser, Kane was given the all-clear by hospital staff and his parents were delighted to be able to celebrate the news at the event.
They hoped to raise £200 at the event held at the Abbots Arms in Holywell, but it went beyond their expectations as they have so far raised £500 with more donations to come.
Karina said: “It went really well. I was so worried people wouldn’t turn up, but all of a sudden it was packed.
“I think there were about 70 people there.
“We’ve still got money coming in after the day which is great.
“I think in total we should have about £700 to £800.”
Karina added: “Scott did half a leg wax because it took so long for them to do. And he had his armpits waxed as well.
“He didn’t enjoy that part, but it was very enjoyable for me!
“Kane has been signed off by the hospital and has now been discharged.
“It has been hard having to go back and fourth to the hospital and we’ve been so worried.
“It’s such a great hospital and he’s had the specialist treatment he needed. I’m so happy.”
Half of the donations given to the couple will be donated back to the research department at Alder Hey to help other families and children dealing with similar conditions to what Kane suffered with.
Karina said she is planning to hold a fundraiser every year for Alder Hey, close to Kane’s birthday, to raise as much money as possible for the hospital who helped their son.
