Hairdressers offer free haircuts for the homeless in Caernarfon, Bangor and Anglesey

A pair of hairdressers from Llanrug are giving up their spare time to give free haircuts to the homeless.

Chris Peel, 28 and Ellie Jones, 30 started ‘Free Haircuts for the Homeless’ last Monday traveling around Caernarfon, Bangor and Anglesey, so far giving 25 people a haircut.

Mr Peel said: “Homeless people don’t have much support and they struggle to eat and drink. If we can offer our services to improve their life in anyway then it’s only a good thing.”

The self employed hairdressers spend on average an hour with each person, not only cutting hair but getting to know them too.

The stories both have heard have exemplified how difficult life on the streets can be.

Miss Jones said: “One person who came to me said he had not eaten for about two days and they were very cold, which was no surprise considering the rips in their clothes.I bought them a sandwich and a hot drink to try and warm them up.

”Afterwards myself and Chris went around the charity shops to ask if they would donate clothes that weren’t sellable rather than throwing them away.

“Unfortunately, the majority said they couldn’t due to company policy which was a huge shame because those clothes could really help the homeless.”

One homeless person in Bangor, the most popular place for the free haircuts, told Mr Peel that he had his blanket stolen which had been bought for him two days earlier by an elderly woman.

Mr Peel said: “It brought me to tears. It’s freezing out there and he had nothing to protect him.”

The hairdressers, who cut the hair on the streets, have now reached out to hostels in the area so they can use their electric for clippers instead of only being able to use scissors.

“Sometimes we get strange looks from members of the public, but homelessness can happen to anyone.” Mr Peel said. “If our project can help in any way we are happy.”
