Wrexham's run of two successive wins came to an end as play-off contenders Gateshead triumphed 2-0 at The Racecourse.
It was just a second defeat in 10 outings for Wrexham while in-form Gateshead made it six wins in a row in their quest for promotion.
There were few chances in the first half, Gateshead leading scorer Danny Johnson cleared the bar after just three minutes while Wrexham responded with Ollie Shenton firing over from Izale McLeod's cross.
Despite some promising breaks, Wrexham did not force Gateshead keeper James Montgomery into a save while opposite number Chris Dunn was on hand to comfortably keep out Johnson's header before the interval.
Shenton was denied by Montgomery at the start of the second half but Gateshead took the lead after 52 minutes.
A cross came in from the right and Jordan Burrow hooked the ball past Dunn.
Gateshead almost scored a second but Dunn was on hand to deny Johnson who was played in by Burrow.
Wrexham pressed for a late equaliser and substitute George Harry saw his goalbound effort blocked by ex-Reds defender Manny Smith from Mark Carrington's cross, and the striker also headed against the bar.
But Gateshead scored a second goal deep into added time.
A quick break upfield led to sub Tom Beere playing in Johnson who slotted past Dunn.
Wrexham (4-4-2): Dunn; Carrington, Riley, Tilt, Jennings; Barry, Penn, Rutherford (White 73), Shenton (Smith 73); Massanka, McLeod (Harry 81). Subs not used: Jalal, Evans.
